Details About Brookdale Lafayette

Brookdale Lafayette, formerly Emeritus at Lafayette, is a Lafayette, Louisiana Assisted Living and Alzheimer’s caremunity for seniors. Located in the exclusive neighborhood of River Ranch, our community is right in the heart of beautiful Lafayette. This up and coming, yet older area of Lafayette offers the best of all worlds. It’s residential yet close to many stores and malls, some of which are within walking distance. In fact, our community is located right behind Target, Coles, Albertson’s and several small shopping centers. And it’s close to the area’s major hospitals, including Our Lady of the Lourdes Regional Medical Center and the Regional Medical Center of Acadiana.

Our residents are spoiled with so many shopping options and restaurants in the area. On average, we take them out three days a week wherever they’d like to go; to Target and Albertson’s, to their personal bank, for ice cream, to one of their favorite restaurants for lunch or any other requested destination in the area. Attending the Acadian Symphony and performances at the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana, visiting our local history museum, taking in a movie or attending local sporting events are also frequently on the calendar. And every other month we spend a day at the casino in nearby Baldwin, LA.

A Wonderful Selection

Set on two acres of beautifully landscaped grounds with a courtyard, Brookdale Lafayette is considered one of the premier "find-a-community/">Louisiana assisted living facilities. Located close to I-10, our community offers 80 apartments all on one level for easy access. Our Assisted Living community has 54 spacious studio apartments in two sizes – 410 square feet and 510 square feet. Each is very senior-friendly and has an open floor plan, a separate bedroom area, a kitchenette with small refrigerator, a microwave and sink with cabinets, a private, handicapped-accessible bathroom with a separate vanity area, an individual temperature control and wall-to-wall carpeting. Each apartment located on the interior of our building has a patio that borders a beautifully landscaped courtyard while exterior units have large windows overlooking our professionally-landscaped property. When a resident moves in, we paint the apartment in a color of his or her choice.

Our assisted living residents share several common areas. These include a lobby sitting area with a fireplace and another sitting/game area with tables and a large skylight. We also have another room with a skylight that is used for our chapel. All denominations are welcome. Our on-site beauty salon has also become a popular social gathering spot. Our activities room is the center for crafts, bingo, making bread and cookies, as well as for various socials, such as our weekly coffee social. Another common area has a grand piano where we have a variety of musical entertainment programs at least four times a month. The community also has a television room and a library area with many donated books, a seating area and more skylights. We even have our own gift shop.

Our memory care neighborhood offers a similar layout except that, for safety reasons, its 26 private studio apartments do not have kitchenettes. It’s important that residents are able to surround themselves with familiar items so they are able to bring in all of their own furnishings and belongings. The neighborhood has its own dining room and separate activities area with a large skylight, where residents do crafts, play games, read the newspaper and watch movies. The community also has a secure, landscaped courtyard with rocking chairs, swings and gazebo where we host many social gatherings, including ice cream socials. Residents love music, so music is nearly always playing.

Strong, Caring Professional Relationships

We work closely with many different home health and hospice agencies, and welcome our residents and their families to choose whomever they feel most comfortable. Home health agencies typically offer the full range of physical, occupational and speech therapy, with therapists providing services in the resident’s apartment. Adult care sitters and hospice providers are also very welcome to come into our community. Our goal is to help residents with all of their care needs so that they can remain here in their own home for the rest of their lives.

A Wonderful, Active Lifestyle

Throughout the day, residents play all kinds of games. Bingo is one of the most popular and there are many opportunities to cook, bake and make crafts.

Our retirement community is also big on parties. We have a big birthday bash once a month with a band, balloons, cake and ice cream. We have house-warming parties for our new residents, as well as weekly coffee or lemonade socials. We also have holiday celebrations.

Partnering with the Local Neighborhood Community

We offer monthly support groups. We also participate as a sponsor in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s (formerly the Memory Walk) to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.

We also partner with many home health and hospice groups that come into our community to speak with our residents and families on a specific topic. Examples include how to handle grief, how family members can deal with feelings of guilt and denial, the stigma around hospice care, the importance of therapy and others. And we have begun to partner with the American Heart Association which is hosting monthly educational programs on such topics as stroke awareness, diet and exercise. We invite the outside community to all of these events.

Fine Dining

We offer three meals a day, served restaurant-style, including an entrée, an alternative and an always-available menu with salads, soups, hamburgers and sandwiches. Our residents always have a choice. They can also wander into the kitchen at any time of the day and ask our wonderful chefs to prepare something just for them. Our menu is very “senior-friendly,” with less salt and less sugar.

Our memory care residents are served three main meals and three mini meals, which include a protein such as peanut butter or cheese. Meals are served on colored plates, so that they can better distinguish their food.
