Details About St. Joseph's Home Care and Hospice

St. Joseph's Hospice is a Medicare-certified, Jointmission approved hospice program. Hospice provides high quality care to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients and their loved ones, including the following services:

  • Physician services
  • Skilled nursing
  • Home health aide care
  • Social work
  • Spiritual care
  • Physical, occupational, speech therapy
  • Bereavement services
  • Homemaking services
  • Medical equipment
  • Medications related to the terminal illness

Hospice focuses on palliative care, that is, care to promote comfort and quality of life, rather than curative treatment. Patients and their families are the driving force in the decision-making process of what care and help is needed. Hospice is able to make it possible for a person to remain at home and be surrounded by his/her family even during a life-threatening illness. Hospice also recognizes and responds to the needs of surviving loved ones by providing bereavement support.

Hospice Volunteers

Volunteers are essential and, in fact, a mandated component to St. Joseph's Hospice. They serve in various areas including that of a friendly visitor or in area nursing homes, at the patient's home, as a respite care volunteer allowing families to take a breather from pressures, or in providing transportation for hospice patients. They also can help with bereavement follow-up or help out in the office.

Many times a hospice volunteer spends time listening to a patient tell their stories or holding their hand to let them know you're there. Volunteers recognize that dying is a part of life, they help people through this time with dignity and comfort.

Training and orientation helps the volunteers through education and guided experience.

Anyone interested in sharing their time and talents can call Betsy Meyer at 218-237-5482. The hospital's toll-free number is 1-800-566-3311.
