Details About Brookdale River Valley Tualatin

Brookdale River Valley Tualatin, formerly Emeritus at River Valley, is among the premier Tualatin assisted living facilities. We are one half mile from I-5 and I-205, right next door to Legacy Meridian Park Hospital which is one of the highest rated hospitals in the U.S. While our retirementmunity is close to exciting downtown Portland, our property is bordered by protected green space and encircled by park-like lawns, meadows and stately established trees. A quiet, peaceful setting with easy accessibility to all that Portland has to offer makes our community the perfect location.

We often organize trips to the refuge where there are wheelchair-accessible trails for the enjoyment for our outdoor enthusiasts and bird watchers. Lake Oswego Golf Course is also just 12 minutes from our community. Residents also love to watch the electronic-controlled model boat races on Tualatin Lake and we often take residents to one of our many local rivers to enjoy an afternoon of fishing. In addition, we are located close to many of the churches our residents have attended all of their lives, making it easy for them to continue belonging to the church of their choice.

A Wonderful Selection

Our gracious, comfortable three-story retirement community has 104 spacious senior apartments, including studios, one-bedrooms, one-bedroom deluxes with two baths and two-bedroom/two-baths. All apartments include a full ADA-certified bathroom, small kitchenette and plenty of closets and cabinets. Most apartments have individual balconies or porches offering a private outdoor space and views of our beautiful park-like setting and distant mountains. In addition, there is ample parking available for residents who drive. There are no buy-in fees or leases and all apartments are rented on a month-to-month basis.

Brookdale River Valley Tualatin features a very large living room with grand piano, a lobby with a sitting area and gas fireplace and an elegant dining room with one full wall of windows overlooking our beautifully landscaped property. We also have an intimate library, a billiards room and a coffee bistro where residents love to read the newspaper and do daily crossword puzzles.

Our senior living community also features an artist studio that is set up with easels and paints for our many residents who are artists including two that taught art at the university level. Our hallways are spacious with rails on one side and each hallway has numerous nooks tucked away for quiet visiting or curling up with a good book. Snack and pop vending machines are located in our activities room and each floor has a full complimentary laundry room. Whether dining with friends, borrowing a book from the library, taking a beloved pet for a stroll, bird watching from the patio or sitting on the covered front porch people watching, our community is designed to embrace residents with the warmth and comfort of home.

Strong, Caring, Professional Relationships

We bring in outside physical, occupational and speech therapists to work with residents right here in the comfort of their own home. With this flexibility, residents can choose therapists who they may have been working with in the past. We are also situated next to Legacy Meridian Park Hospital and to many medical clinics and physician offices. In addition, residents can use our house-preferred pharmacist for medications or they can continue using their own because it’s always their choice.

We work closely with several different hospice teams in the immediate area including Willamette, Providence Hospice, Hospice of the NW, Legacy Hospice and Kaiser Hospice. Should family members wish to be with their loved one while they are receiving hospice care, they are always welcome to stay in one of our guest suites.

Our Staff

We pride ourselves on the longevity of our staff and several of our resident assistants and med aides have been with us for 15-plus years. Our management team also includes several professionals who have been in the senior health care field for most of their career and have worked here for more than a decade. Because of their longevity, our staff knows our residents well and as a result, they can more easily recognize if something isn’t quite right. In many cases, they have been able to catch serious illnesses before they become full blown. We also employ a full-time registered nurse who oversees all of our caregivers.

This includes our staff of med aids, who are responsible for ordering and dispensing mediations as well as contacting physicians for clarification and recommendations. Our residents often use such words as sympathetic, approachable, accessible and compassionate when describing our staff which is an attitude that comes directly from our executive director.

We were listed as one of the top ten senior living communities in the Portland Business Journal. But most importantly, we often receive wonderful notes of gratitude from our residents and their families like these; “Words are inadequate to express all that my heart would say to you regarding my appreciation for the loving care given my mother and for your guidance in helping me navigate a new chapter in her life. Mom calls the caregivers her angels. Thank you again for being such a caring and supportive community.” “Violeta took all my qualms away with her calm concern and reassurance.” “The food is very good. All the ‘girls’ are so kind, we feel really safe here.” “Your caregivers are loving and compassionate.” “Thank you for doing my laundry when I wasn’t feeling well even though it’s not one of the regular services I need done.”

A Wonderful Place to Live

Brookdale River Valley Tualatin is the only senior living community in the area that offers both "senior-living-solutions/independent-living/">independent living and "senior-living-solutions/assisted-living/">assisted living under one roof. Residents can move into one apartment and remain there. There’s no need to move from one apartment to another or from one building to another should their health requirements change. Personal services are simply added based upon the resident’s needs and wishes and they can be added on a temporary basis as well. If, for example, an “independent” resident is recovering from surgery, he or she can take advantage of assisted living services eliminating the need to have outside home health services brought in. And unlike some senior living facilities, our diverse group of residents enjoy doing everything together from activities to meals and outings creating a wonderful sense of community. Our staff members, many of whom have worked here for more than ten years, are a big reason why Brookdale River Valley Tualatin feels so much like home. They pride themselves on making sure each resident is comfortable, welcomed and valued. In addition, many of our residents are from the immediate area and are still members of many local groups and churches, further strengthening the community feeling at Brookdale River Valley Tualatin.

Whether a resident is quiet and shy or wants to be on the go all the time, we offer a wide range of activities to suit everyone. Whether we’re cheering for our favorite sports team on Monday Night Football or cheering on our Wii bowling teammates, we’re having fun. Oktoberfest, senior prom, family appreciation dinners, bell choir, concerts and sing-alongs bring out the party spirit. Our regular offerings of daily exercise include walk & talk club, card games, bingo, worship services, bible study, book club, gardening (green house or outdoor) and educational and health seminars are just some of the many opportunities designed to maintain strong minds, bodies and spirits. Plus, at Brookdale River Valley Tualatin, we find any excuse to celebrate whether it’s anniversaries, accomplishments, birthdays, holidays or seasonal events. Activities are always geared to our residents’ interests and in fact, our life enrichment director interviews each new resident to learn what social activities, personal hobbies and life passions they may have and does everything possible to add those interests to the calendar. Each new day awaits with planned activities, home cooked meals and lots of opportunities to share and live life to the fullest. Live, laugh and love while we take care of the details.

Partnering with the Local Community

Our residents have the volunteering spirit and often join together to raise money for worthy causes. For example, our community is co-sponsoring an event with Oregon Heat to support its fuel assistance program. The event, which features a display of gingerbread houses decorated by local businesses and churches, is held right here. Attendees buy raffle tickets and vote on their favorite gingerbread house while enjoying refreshments and music.

We are a proud member of the Tualatin Chamber of Commerce and frequently host community events in our home. Whether it’s a monthly meet-and-greet, a special fund-raising event benefitting the needy or an educational presentation, our residents enjoy the excitement of seeing new faces and staying connected with the community-at-large. In addition to Chamber events, we often welcome civic groups such as Toastmasters, Rotary and Kiwanis to use our spacious community room. Of course, residents are often long-standing members of these groups and are thrilled to introduce fellow members to their “family” at Brookdale River Valley Tualatin.

Fine Dining

Three delicious, nutritionally balanced meals are served restaurant style in the main dining room. Each meal features a main entrée with a menu of alternate options offering choices to accommodate individual preferences and special diets. From fantastic shrimp scampi to liver and onions, many residents rave about our food. Our dining room has open, unassigned seating so residents can meet and greet a variety of friends and family. Snacks, coffee and juice are always available on a help-yourself basis throughout the day.
