Phoenix nursing homes provide physical, mental, social and psychological care for the area’s sizeable senior population. Nursing homes focus on giving continuous medical care and assistance for daily living activities. There are many aspects of Phoenix skilled nursing facilities of which seniors and their loved ones should be aware before committing to one.
Nursing home care comes in two varieties, short-term and long-term care. Some facilities provide one type of care while some are licensed for both. Short-term care is focused on helping patients recover from strokes, heart attacks and aneurisms. After recovery, patients resume their previous lives, sometimes with the aid of homemaker services, or move to an assisted living facility.
Long-term patients have severe mental or physical impairment like dementia and Alzheimer’s, poor motor control or brain damage. Medical personnel are near the patients all day long to help with things like medical testing, meals, bathroom needs, bathing, walking and multiple kinds of rehabilitative therapy.
Skilled nursing facility care is a stressful situation for senior patients, their families and even the caregivers. There are cases of caregiver negligence, overmedication and abuse, which has fueled prospective patient caution. Also, patients can also make administering care hard because they believe they can take care of themselves. Families can complicate matters by not having similar expectations of care and taking it out on the caregivers. There are many countervailing parts of nursing home care that make it a situation that calls for a complete understanding.
The decision to send seniors to a nursing home often comes from a doctor’s requirement after a hospital visit. The highest quality hospitals can typically recommend nursing homes with the best reputations in the area. Arizona hospitals are rated slightly under the national average in the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems that surveys for patients’ hospital experiences. Some of the hospitals with the area with the best care and patient experience ratings are Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, the Mayo Clinic and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.
Paying for nursing home costs is an important subject because of its high cost relative to other options. In the Phoenix area, semi-private and private nursing home rooms cost $5,658 and $6,844 per month. Assisted living facility care bears a monthly cost of $3,000. Other considerations to understand are Medicare insurance restrictions. The doctor’s approval will cover the first 20 days of any Medicare qualified skilled nursing stay. After that, Medicare will provide coverage for only the first 100 days of a stay during that benefit period.
Our site intends to help seniors and their families understand the myriad of considerations they must weigh when dealing with nursing home care. We want seniors and their loved ones to be able to find the most attentive, compassionate and dedicated staff possible that intersects with their financial and type of care restraints.
