Our site intends to aid seniors and their families who are looking into nursing care. We want to help them understand the many complex issues surrounding nursing homes so they can end up in a facility that matches their financial, medical and social needs.
Hot Springs nursing home patients have medical, custodial and social care needs that fall outside the capabilities of lower levels of care but are not urgent enough for a hospitalization. Nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities, offer various lengths of nursing care to its residents who have many different health issues. Patients’ conditions are monitored, examined and managed by a full staff of caregivers, which includes licensed and registered nurses and physicians, certified nursing assistants, food service workers, housekeepers, counselors, therapists, non-medical personnel and social workers.
Patients looking for a Hot Springs skilled nursing facility can expect to pay more than the Arkansas median level for monthly residency. Semi-private SNF rooms cost $4,867 per month, about $300 per month more than the state median. Private SNF accommodations bear a monthly cost of $5,019, over $100 per month higher than the median level.
Certain area nursing facilities provide more than just the usual amenities for short-term and long-term care. Some have services that tend to family caregivers and their patients. Respite care offers patients nursing care for a short period of time. This break in family caregiving allows caretakers relief from the daily pressures of their arrangements. Time off from caregiving will help future treatment be more committed and more effective. Adult day health care is tailored to family caregivers who go to work during the day. They give patients proper medical care and provide many outlets for socialization and recreation.
Short-term care is given to patients who need rehabilitation for acute medical events like operations, aneurisms, strokes, cardiac arrest and fall. These patients must have a doctor’s permission to enter a short-term facility to gain admittance. Hospital care is important to give patients an appropriate diagnosis and to start off the recovery process on the right track. Based on patients’ previous hospital experiences, the best health care centers in the Hot Springs area are National Park Medical Center and Leo N. Levi National Arthritis Hospital. Patients’ personal treatment plans are usually centered on speech, physical, respiratory, occupational or auditory therapy. Once patients have restored enough strength and functioning to leave short-term care, they have usually not fully recovered. Another step of care, oftentimes in the form of assisted living or in home care, is often needed for these patients to finish the recuperation process.
Long-term care is for patients who have advanced health problems like congestive heart failure, Alzheimer’s, dementia, emphysema, cancer, diabetes mellitus, Fibromyalgia, atherosclerosis or osteoarthritis. Many extended care residents have conditions that are deteriorating when arriving at a nursing facility. Nursing professionals are tasked with reversing or forestalling these illnesses. Patients often require complex courses of treatment for rapidly changing symptoms. All caregivers are responsible for the comfort of each patient. Nurses and doctors supervised patients’ treatment plans and perform medical procedures like indwelling urinary catheter care, enteral feeding tubes, medication adjustment injections, wound care and CPR. Non-medical personnel are tasked with assisting patients with everyday hygiene and activities daily living. Patients’ mental health and psychosocial well-being are nurtured by counseling services, trips, visitation events, recreational activities and spiritual guidance.
Many seniors and their families rely on government assistance to cover some of the cost of nursing care. Medicare is one such government program that offers financial support to the elderly and disabled population. Medicare benefits run out after 100 days of nursing stays. The first 20 days of nursing care are fully covered but the next 80 days are subject to a daily copay. Medicare will only be activated if the patient has had a qualifying hospital stay of at least three days prior to seeking nursing care. They also must only receive nursing care for a problem diagnosed during that hospitalization. The program does not cover patients who only need custodial care. Getting in touch with your state Medicare Financial Intermediary or State Health Insurance Assistance Program can yield much more detail about the various provisions and requirements of the program.
