Detroit nursing homes provide specific care and assistance for patients' medical and daily living needs. There are many different levels of service. The most general break down is short-term versus long-term. There are also more intensive skilled nursing facilities for specialized care, rehabilitative and therapy care, and intermediate care.
Detroit skilled nursing facilities will usually focus either short or long-term care. Short-term care’s intent is to help senior patients recover from acute medical issues. The most common are stroke, fall related injuries and aneurisms. After being discharged from a nursing home, short-term patients may seek care at an assisted living home or return to independent living. Long-term care patients have major health problems.
They may need intensive skilled care like medicine management or tracheotomy care, intermediate care that requires periodic monitoring, or custodial care that looks after activities of daily living. Nursing home staff try to keep long-term patients are comfortable as possible. If their conditions worsen they may be transferred from a SNF to hospice.
Detroit nursing home costs are above the national average. Semi-private rooms cost $6,494 and private rooms cost $7,178 per month. Assisted living costs are about $100 more than the national average at $3,300 per month. Homemaker services, home health aide and adult day care have monthly costs of $3,813, $3,813, and $1,733, respectively. For seniors under Medicare, the program will only fully cover costs for the first 20 days of a stay and up to 100 days with coinsurance payments in a single benefit period.
Getting the best hospital care prior to moving to a nursing home is an important component of quality care. Michigan has hospitals that are better than the national average with regards to patients’ experiences like nurse and doctor communication, quiet, information about care after hospitalization and whether they would recommend the hospital. In Detroit the best hospitals based on prior patients’ experiences are Harper University Hospital and St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Doctors will require senior patients to be admitted to nursing homes on their medical prerogative.
When looking around for nursing care it is helpful to look at how generally happy the patients and the staff are. Happy patients and staff typically signal compassionate and proper care. Many nursing homes must operate with stressed patients and personnel. This can cause caregivers difficulty in providing care and can lead to insufficient care. Patient’s family members can also make it challenging for caregivers to do their job. Sometimes a positive environment can make all the difference.
