At AssistedSeniorLiving, we try to help guide seniors and their loved ones in making a decision that will result in a quality nursing home that fits their emotional, medical and financial requirements.
Brookings nursing homes supply vital services for patients who need advanced levels of custodial, medical and social care for many different health conditions. Area nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities, are predominantly utilized by patients who are recuperating from operations, recover from acute medical events or need to manage a persistent and serious medical problem. Patients are given various forms of treatment through a facility’s interdisciplinary team of caregivers.
This team, which includes registered and licensed nurses and doctors, certified nursing aides, social workers, therapists, non-medical staff, food service workers, recreational planners and counselors, forms a network that works to meet the individual needs of every resident.
The monthly cost for residency at a Brookings skilled nursing facility sits about $100 beneath the South Dakota median level. Private and semi-private SNF rooms bear monthly costs of $5,688 and $5,323, respectively.
The two main focal points of nursing care are short-term and long-term care. Nursing homes also have many supplementary services that assist family caregivers and their patients. Respite care consists of short nursing home stays for patients of family caretakers. Many patients receive treatment from unpaid friends, family members or neighbors who often have very demanding jobs. Respite care allows caregivers to have some free time to spend on themselves or to get to other obligations that have had to let pass by. This form of care is also used to help certain patients test the confines of nursing care before fully moving to such a facility. Adult day health care is utilized by working caregivers who do not want to leave their patients alone in the daytime.
Short-term care is given to patients who were hospitalized for operations, falls, cardiac arrest, strokes and other acute medical trauma. Patients are diagnosed and treated by doctors who decide if patients need to move to a nursing facility. Quality hospital care can help patients receive the correct diagnosis and can affect how a patient responds to further rehabilitation. The best health care in Brookings, based on patients’ hospital experiences, is provided by Brookings Hospital. Nursing facility physicians put patients on a personalized care program that seeks to ready patients to return to their normal lives. The task of rebuilding strength and function is often aided with occupational, respiratory, auditory, speech and physical therapy. Post-nursing stay, many patients need or opt to move to assisted living or in home care.
Long-term care is for patients who need targeted and responsive treatment to combat serious medical conditions like emphysema, cancer, congestive heart failure, diabetes mellitus, Parkinson’s, Fibromyalgia and atherosclerosis. Patients with certain mental illnesses may be housed in a separate wing to keep them from wandering out of the facility. All members of a facility’s network of caregivers are responsible for specific roles that assist patients every step of the way. Physicians and nurses are available all hours of the day to monitor patients’ progress and to perform medical procedures like wound care, enteral feeding tubes, injections, medication adjustment, CPR and indwelling urinary catheter care. Non-medical staff members see to patients’ everyday comfort by helping them complete activities of daily living. Patients’ social well-being is promoted through services like leisure activities, self-care opportunities, events for socialization among patients, counseling services and spiritual guidance.
Medicaid is an important program for seniors who have limited income and assets. Medicaid is a joint Federal and State program that helps cover most of the cost of nursing care for eligible patients. Eligibility varies state by state but is usually decided by a means test. For many states patients must be under the Federal Poverty line when investigated by a case worker. Patients can only receive Medicaid benefits at nursing homes certified by the program. Calling your state’s Medicaid Office or State Health Insurance Assistance Program can tell you much more information about the requirements, limitations and provisions of the program.
