Canon City Continuing Care Retirement Communities

Canon City Assisted Living And Senior Care Services

Seniors in assisted living facilities may need help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) but they will enjoy the fresh mountain air and the many days of sunshine that Canon City provides. With nearly as many days of sunshine per year as Southern California (300 sunny days are average), but without the smog and congestion and high price tag, Canon City is a hidden gem for retirement.

Fresh air, friendly people and that warm small town environment (population is 16,00) are what Canon City, Colorado residents are known for. Here you will find assisted living in the best of all worlds - a small community tucked away in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains but close enough to metro areas like Pueblo, Colorado Springs and even Denver.

At 5300 feet above sea level, Canon City is located in a ’mountain bowl’ which protects it from the harsher storms that roll over the mountains. In other parts of the country many people struggle with sinus problems due to humidity. The air in Canon City is warm and dry, not humid, and many elderly people are happy to leave behind allergies and joint or sinus problems once they enter this climate. It’s no wonder the city’s nickname is "The Climate Capital of Colorado".

There are many places of interest in Canon City: The Royal Gorge is a spectacular natural site to enjoy. For active seniors, there are areas for hiking as well as the Royal Gorge Scenic Railway. Riding the Railway through the National Forest and seeing the Arkansas River is enjoyed by kids and by kids at heart.

Besides the many parks and hiking trails, several natural wildlife attractions are in Canon City including the Dinosaur Depot, where there are exhibits of fossils and demonstrations of fossil collecting for study, or the Garden Park Fossil Area which can be traveled by car to observe fossil excavation sites. Some of the largest and most complete dinosaur fossils in the country have been found in this area. Another fun outing is a visit to the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey. The beautiful and serene abbey has the Wet Mountains as its backdrop and features many wines for tasting.

The cost of living in this southwestern Colorado area is much lower than the national average. Seniors enjoy a rate of approx $2,500 per month for a one-bedroom private room, when across the country a similar room’s average rate is $6,874. The state sales tax is 2.9%, much lower than the average 9.6% across the country.
There is an ever-growing senior population, with the average age of residents being 42.
