Fort Lauderdale Continuing Care Retirement Communities

Fort Lauderdale Assisted Living Facilities And More

The "Venice of America" with its system of intricate canals has surprisingly affordable assisted living options. Combine that with 3,000 hours of yearly sunshine, beautiful beaches, and plenty of cultural amenities, and Fort Lauderdale becomes a jewel for retirees.

Though Fort Lauderdale's cost of living is 8% higher than the national average, there is no tax on retirement income, inheritances or estates. A private, one-bedroom in a Fort Lauderdale assisted living facility averages $2,250 a month (the Florida average is $2,663; the national average $3,261), according to a recent Genworth Financial survey on long-term care. A private room in a nursing home averages $265 a day--a semi-private averages $244.

Within Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), the Assisted Living Unit is responsible for the licensing and regulation of assisted living facilities, adult family care homes, and adult day care centers. You can find inspection reports at the AHCA's website.

Stroll along the Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk with its many shops, cafes, and bars. Historic downtown is home of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Museum of Discovery and Science, Museum of Art and Old Fort Lauderdale Village and Museum. Stop by for solitude at the award-winning Broward County Main Library. Visit Fort Lauderdale's International Swimming Hall of Fame Museum. The 180-acre Birch State Park has nature trails, a lagoon for canoeing, and excellent bird watching. The Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop is a huge indoor/outdoor flea market and home of the world's largest drive-in movie theater. Other can't-miss attractions include the Museum of Discovery and Science and Blockbuster IMAX Theater, the Old Dillard Cultural Arts Museum, the historic Stranahan House, the Museum of Art and the Fort Lauderdale Historical Museum.

Sports fans have plenty of teams to cheer on. The Yankees and Orioles conduct spring training in Fort Lauderdale Stadium. And nearby Miami is home to NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLB teams. Additionally, the University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University all field various sports.
