Harrisburg Continuing Care Retirement Communities

Unbiased Info On Harrisburg Assisted Living

There are many great places in this country in which to settle down and retire. However, none may be better than Harrisburg, Illinois. A Harrisburg assisted living facility (ALF) may also be a good choice for those seeking a home for parents or elderly relatives.

Harrisburg is a "northern" town with a "southern" touch. Located near the southern tip of Illinois a little more than 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri, Harrisburg has a population of around 10,000. Because of its smaller size, fewer Harrisburg assisted living facilities are available than in larger cities. However, the town still offers a wide choice of senior facilities geared to different needs. Harrisburg has much to offer its residents, including seniors who are physically able to get out and around. The town is in close proximity the the famed Shawnee National Forest. This preserve is home to more than 500 species of wildlife and also features some 150 miles of streams, with numerous waterfalls, lakes and ponds along them. Back in town, Harrisburg has the only Wal-Mart in Salina County, along with shopping areas, restaurants and other places of commerce. Specific attractions include Saline Creek Pioneer Village and Shawnee Hills Country Club. As one of the largest health care facilities in southeastern Illinois, the Harrisburg Medical Center offers a wide variety of patient services.

Illinois is the home of more than 1.5 million seniors, which puts it above the national average in terms of the percentage of elderly citizens. However, its cost-of-living index is in fact lower than the national average. The relatives of the elderly can take comfort in knowing that the Illinois Department of Public Health has an assisted living division that performs annual inspections on every ALF in the state. The agency makes available information on complaints concerning specific facilities, which can assist families in determining which ALF is best suited for them.

An ALF differs somewhat from a nursing home. It will provide supervision and assistance to its residents, and may offer them various daily activities. Careful monitoring of the residents will assure that their health and safety needs are satisfied. Personal care can include housekeeping and laundry services and assistance in taking medication. Public areas are often available for dining and socializing, although living quarters are usually private. Unlike those living in a nursing home, however, residents of an ALF will experience more independence.
