First things first: money. If you already live in the Pittsburgh area, you know it's pretty reasonable. In fact, the overall cost of living is 8% below the national average. Though state and local taxes are on the high side--10% combined--your retirement benefits won't be taxed as long as you meet certain requirements. Here's where your financial health will really prosper: the average cost of a one-bedroom in an assisted living facility is just $2,100 a month. Compare that with the Pennsylvania average of $3,000 and a national average of $3,261.
The Pittsburgh area has dozens of senior centers where you can have lunch, socialize, attend programs and get involved in activities. For example, the Plum Senior Community Center offers adult education, a noontime lunch, transportation to the center, VITA tax assistance, recreational and social activities, volunteer opportunities; health screenings; outreach activities; and bocce, golf, and pool leagues. If you need to get around the city, enjoy free Port Authority transport with a senior bus pass allowing you to use buses, trolleys and rapid-transit lines. Play golf at North Park and South Park golf courses with season senior golf permits for $60 plus the daily rates of $8 for 18-holes or $5 for 9-holes. (Carts are not included) Enroll in a Better Choices, Better Health program, a free workshop that provides support for continuing normal daily activities and dealing with the emotions brought about by chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, heart disease and stroke, among others.
