My mother was sent for rehabilitation after a stroke. When she had been there for a few weeks, she complained of being very tired and could not effectively participate in her rehabilitative therapy. When I asked Dr. McCuen (sp?) about the possibility of an additive effect of all of the medicines she was taking (3 for blood pressure + 3 others), he impatiently replied, "Everyone is tired in here. I don't take anyone off medicine unless it threatens their life." Furthermore, mom frequently urinates and always has. Some aides and nurses often tell her she doesn't have to go when mom asks to be taken to the bathroom. She has had to go in her clothing. (There are a few aides who are kind and patient.) It seems the majority of patients are in an electronically wired wheelchair that beeps loudly if the patient moves or shifts in the chair, a jarring experience!
