Mission Terrace Convalescent Hospital

My husband spent nearly a month at Mission Terrace recuperating from a
stroke. While the experience was extremely difficult, I saw him make steady
gains in his recovery each day and the nursing staff and therapists were a
steady stream of positive support and sunshine. Their smiles made it so much
easier to see my husband struggling to regain abilities to do simple things and
made me feel welcome and comfortable, no matter how long I stayed each
day. The lovely environment helped me to feel more at home than when we
were still at the hospital and I often passed an hour or two reading in the
garden area. I would highly recommend this facility and commend all the staff
for their excellent care and endless positivity on my husband?s road to

As the family member of an aging man whose last 5 years has been
in and out of nursing homes and the hospital, I have seen the good
and the bad sides of caring for the elderly. Although, the very best
care is in-home, it is very costly to staff a qualified trusting person 24
hours a day. Our time spent at Mission Terrace had positives and
negatives. My opinions are based on my past experience as a family
member and voice of my aging father.

First of all, having six patients share one bathroom is absurd and
detrimental to anyone's dignity. It's bad enough having three patients
to a room. Also, three patients to a TV... Sure, I could opt to pay for a
private room, but honestly, I would have to take out a second full
time job to pay for it.

The food was beautiful looking but tasted horrible according to my
father.

My understanding is the owner of the business is a"@#$%" and has
strict rules the staff must follow regarding the patients. One such rule
was that patients were not allowed to roam the halls at their own will.
They were either confined to their dark and dreary bedrooms or
allowed to use the dark and uninviting dining room or a common area
should they have a visitor. Basically, call it what you want, my father
was told he had to stay in his room unless he had a visitor... Don't let
the beautiful glass chandeliers and flowers deceive you! While, I met
the female owner only once, should I ever be damned to cross her
path again as a family member of a patient, I will not hesitate to also
be a "@#$%" to ensure my family is well taken care of.

The physical therapy aspects were very poor. Both in staffing and in
equipment.

There are the good CNAs and there are the bad ones like everywhere.

The smell in the building is horrid... Grant it, the building is old. But
the smell is not because of an old building.

Yes, the patients are very very lonely. I always made it a point to
say "hello" and chat with the ones I saw loitering by their doorways
since they knew they were not allowed in the hall.

The social activities were very boring and sporatic at best.

On the positive side, the transportation service is fabulous. The
Mission Terrace van is very professional looking and the operator is
dressed as a limo driver and very very nice.

To sum it up, don't let the fancy exterior and decorations fool you.
The place is a @#$%-hole. Needs an administrative overhaul that
employes people who care about the wellbeing of the residents
instead of making a buck to establish their facade.

Highly recommended. Caring staff and very clean. Most residents
