The Horizon Club

Looks like a beautiful, upscale place, but look closer. The elevators in the assisted living
area are deathtraps if someone is stuck on them, especially in the summer, when the
temperature inside could quickly rise to over 100 degrees if someone is caught inside.
Instead of immediately fixing the elevators when they are broken (which happened at least 3
times within less than 1 year while my mother was there, they take their good old time to fix
it, which means that if the resident lives on the side where the elevator is broken, they have
to walk all the way around the square to the other elevator, then back again to get to the
main building, same in reverse when they go back to their apt. My mother also had $200
STOLEN from her wallet there. They also gave men (male aids) keys to my mother's room
without having the decency or respect for her to introduce her to them first, or ask her if this
would be ok. Therefore, she saw a man wandering around her apt. who she didn't know & was
extremely frightened (who wouldn't be) ?? She said suppose I was undressed or in the
bathroom? When I told the management about this, they promised me if wouldn't happen
again. It did.
Also, when she first moved in there, they NEVER told me that she had to be back by 10:00
PM to get her medication, or I should take it with me to give to her if we were coming home
later. So, when I brought her back later in the evening, they refused to give it to her, &
wouldn't let me give it to her (it was in a locked drawer in her apt). She is on blood pressure
medication, anti-depressants, etc., & they REFUSED to let her have it!
The batteries in her hearing aids weren't working a lot of the time, since nobody paid
attention to them (they were supposed to be checked everyday to see if they worked), so she
walked around deaf most of the time she was there, which was extremely frustrating for her -
but as long as the management could hear, they could care less about their residents hearing.
The also brought in plants from her terrace as there was supposed to be a hurricane in a day
or two, but never sprayed them first, so she got bugs all over her apt. Where is their common
sense?? A lot of the times she just sat in her apt looking at TV or looking at the walls since
they were too lazy to remind her about what was going on in the assisted living or
independent living bldg. even though I asked them to & we were paying for reminders since
she has mild Alzheimers. Many other bad things happened there - too numerous to put on
here, but the above should give you an idea of how this place is run & how much caring goes
into in.
