Only reviewing Alzheimer's/dementia ward and though I have no basis
for comparison, I am NOT pleased! Everything is done "cheaper" even
though it's the most expensive home. Though meals are offered
several times a day, little oversight by staff insures that the
percentage of food eaten stated in medical charts is WAY
overestimated. Patients falling over and complete strangers catching
them, wheelchair and walker fights by elderly patients in the hallways
and common areas are often stopped by visitors, not staff. Constant
missing and/or stolen items, poor management never knows what the
left or right hand is doing, laundry service never returns clothing
despite being labeled, patients get horrible bedsores, very little
continence management for those suffering from partial or total
incontinence in addition. Ask for a patient to be pottied and it can
take up to an hour or more. Now why would you allow someone with
bedsores to sit in a wet and dirty adult diaper for hours?? CNAs for
the most part are wonderful, but so poorly paid (yes, told by both staff
and families of patients) that the turnover is high. They never do
what they say they will, whether it's finding missing possessions,
paperwork being returned to you, nutritional oversight, or a definitive
answer to a simple question. Patient care conferences leave much to
be desired as they are rescheduled or you're given the wrong time to
show up and then have to wait through someone's appointment who
was taken before you. There seems to be only a very basic "overview"
of patients and, with the exception of a few select CNAs, very little
attention is paid to physical touching and comfort. Meals are
extremely cheap -- I was floored by the lack of concern about
patients who are not eating and who are at shocking body weight and
losing rapidly. Toothless elderly residents are given hamburgers and
chips, enchiladas too hot for every resident (the staff loves them
though), no coffee is offered or received after meals, and desserts
offered but then forgotten or not given. Nasty mystery meat and
mashed potatoes and gravy has been served almost every single day
since my patient has been there. It seems there is more concern
about the money bottom line than the patients. Love a majority of
the nursing staff, but the management and daily running of this
center leaves much to be desired.
