My father told me the Director of this facility, took him to his credit
union-where he said they opened an account. He was residing at this
facility at the time, and said he did not know what the Director had
him sign. We call this a conflict of interest and/or Financial Abuse of
the Elderly. Are we supposed to believe the Director did not know he
was not of sound, competent mind? He also did not receive proper
treatment- having to repeatedly ask for care for his leg which oozed
discharge and had severe odor. This should have been properly
treated, along with his critical Podiatry needs. My father ended up in
ICU and at the time of this writing, has been on Life Support. Some
nurses will tell you the infection in my father's leg could have
contributed to his off the charts glucose/sugar number/level. (1133)
Was anyone monitoring him at this facility? Thank goodness his leg
was later, properly treated at the hospital. His shoulder was also
broken while in this assisted living facility and hospital staff had
questions about this. I was never notified that my father was taken to
the E.R. and admitted to ICU. Only the grandsons- whom the Director
helped get a Power of Attorney, and which I quickly revoked, were
notified. Despite frequently seeing me in the facility- the next of kin,
his only biological daughter and only local contact, the Director went
behind my back to arrange for and witness a Power of Attorney. I was
not even given the courtesy of knowing this was taking place. My
father already has a Power of Attorney. In order for my father to
obtain a new, LEGAL Power of Attorney, the law states he would have
to be of sound mind to make this choice, which he is not. The Director
did not know this? Also, the previous Power of Attorney would need to
be dismissed. Again, my father looked stunned when I accidentally
found the papers and showed them to him. He had no memory of
signing them and even said, "what papers?" I also asked several
times for the leakage to be stopped under the bathroom sink. My
father asked several times for clean sheets because his sheets had
urine on them. A Director loses his or her professionalism when
choosing "sides" within a family. I have usually adopted the attitude
that all family members deserve courtesy and respect and it is best
for everyone to work together for the good of the patient/resident.
Alienation of a family- by professionals, is just not acceptable. If the
facility could not meet my father's increasing nursing needs, the
Director should have said so, then an appropriate placement could be
acquired elsewhere. Sometimes, it is just as important to refuse
residents as it is to admit them- especially if the Director, knows the
resident's needs cannot be met. My father paid $2981.00 a month for
this? As a Social Worker for 30 years, and daughter, I take this very
seriously and have made the appropriate complaints. I just wish to
warn the public and increase awareness so this never happens to
another family.
