New Orleans Assisted Living / Senior Living Options

In the city of New Orleans, there are few assisted living options. To find one you may have to venture to one of the cities--like Slidell--or neighborhoods outside of the city.

Though New Orleans healthcare is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, there are plenty of quality private hospitals in the area including the giant Ochsner Hospital system, the Tulane Medical Center, and the LSU Health Care System. The city also received a $100 million grant from the federal government to help rebuild the city's public health system.

In the New Orleans area, a one-bedroom in an assisted living facility averages $3,619 a month; the Louisiana average is $3,065; the national average is $3,261. A private room in a nursing home averages $5,170 a month. The State of Louisiana has set very specific rules for all adult care (called the Adult Residential Care Minimum Standards). Here are some standards for assisted living facilities:

Resident's Living Units are defined as "single or double-occupancy living units which residents may share if they choose. There shall be no more than two (2) bedrooms per living unit and each unit shall include at a minimum: a food preparation area consisting of a sink with hot and cold running water, electrical outlets, mini refrigerator, cooking appliance (such as microwave or stove), food storage cabinets, and counter space; a private bath which includes a toilet, sink, and shower or tub. The bathrooms must be ADA accessible, as required by the State Fire Marshal; dining/sitting/bedroom area; and, storage/closet space."

The New Orleans Council on Aging offers a number of programs for seniors. One is the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). "RSVP provides a link between those 55 years and older who wish to volunteer in the community and agencies that need the wisdom and talents of these volunteers with benefits such as insurance and recognition events."
