The State of Texas defines a assisted living facilities as "establishments that furnish food and shelter to four or more persons, unrelated to the owner, and provide assisted living services, minor treatment under the direction and supervision of a physician, or services that meet some need beyond basic provision of food, shelter, and laundry." Facilities are categorized as Type A, B, and E. Type A facilities only accept residents who are able to evacuate the premises unassisted and that don't require routine nighttime attendance. Type B facilities take residents who don't qualify for Type A facilities. Type E facilities are similar to Type As but are limited to 16 beds.

The cost for a one-bedroom in a Dallas assisted living facility is $3,700 a month, according to a recent national survey by Genworth Financial. The state average is $3,210.
