Chesapeake Independent Living

Chesapeake Assisted Living Plus Senior Care

Chesapeake is a city that takes its seniors seriously. Dozens of assisted living options, 20 senior clubs, and eight community centers focused on those "55 and Better," make this city attractive for retirees.

Chesapeake is a relative bargain compared to Virginia cities further north. The city's cost of living is 10% above the national average or about 30% less than Alexandria and Arlington, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For taxes, Virginia tends toward the middle. For example, the combined state and local tax burden is 9.1%. It does not tax Social Security benefits, but you are taxed on your entire income, including federal annuities and military pensions. There is no inheritance tax and no estate tax.

A private, one-bedroom in a Chesapeake assisted living facility averages $3,995 a month, according to a recent Genworth Financial survey on long-term care. A private room in a nursing home averages $207 a day--a semi-private averages $183. With eight community centers in the city, seniors who want to get out, socialize, exercise and keep their minds sharp will have many opportunities. Some of the recent center offerings are "Wise up on Meds," Eye Glass Clean and Adjustment, Mystery Bus Trip, Brain Aerobics, and Laughter Therapy. The Chesapeake area is also home to 20 senior clubs like the "Busy Bees" and the "Sassy Seniors."

For active seniors who enjoy the outdoors, head out to one of the city's parks with bike and walking trails including Northwest River Park, Oak Grove Lake Park, Indian River Park, Western Branch Park, along with Deep Creek Lock and Great Bridge Lock. Also, check out the Dismal Swamp Trail, a multi-use trail open to bicycling, walking, running, horseback riding, and boating.
