In Utah, there are eight levels of care: Home Health, Assisted Living Facility Type I, Assisted Living Facility Type II, Small Health Care Facility - Type N, Intermediate Care Facility/Nursing Facility, Skilled Nursing Facility, Hospital, and Hospice. Both types of assisted living facilities provide 24-hour, seven days a week care. In Type I facilities, residents receive minimal help with activities of daily living (ADLs) while Type II facilities provide full assistance with ADLs. Type II residents require and receive more help with mobility and general care. These are aging in place facilities.

Salt Lake City has 29 skilled nursing homes, but only 20 have publicly reported Medicare ratings. The average rating is 2.7 stars out of 5, with most facilities scoring poorly. Only four homes have 4 stars or better, while ten rate 2 stars or lower. This widespread low rating means families should carefully review individual facility reports before choosing care here.

Staffing data shows an average of 3.4 nursing hours per resident daily, but only 1.0 hour comes from a registered nurse. A 50% annual nurse turnover rate indicates frequent staff changes, which can impact consistent care. High turnover and low RN hours are common concerns linked to lower quality ratings in this area.

Salt Lake County has 13 hospitals, including 11 with emergency departments like Holy Cross Hospital. The statewide annual cost for a shared room is $58,400, but this isn't specific to Salt Lake City. Given the low average ratings locally, families may want to also consider nursing homes in neighboring areas with stronger performance records.
