Riverside Retirement Communities

With over 80 assisted living facilities, Riverside is a city that gives seniors enough choices to satisfy every need and lifestyle. And even though California is known for its high housing costs, this city along the Santa Ana River is quite affordable.

Though the overall cost of living is 23% above the national average, the cost of senior living options is bargain priced. According to a recent national survey by Genworth Financial, a one-bedroom in an assisted living facility averages $3,175 a month compared to the national average of $3,261. A private room in a nursing home averages $198 a day while a semi-private room runs $184.

Riverside boasts 51 parks and a handful of senior community centers. The Janet Goeske Center has enough programs and activities to keep you busy every day of the year. Some of them include a book club, garden club, supper club, bingo, legal assistance, hearing aid assistance, support groups and many more. The La Sierra Park Center has free programs for Tai Chi, sewing, chess, arts and crafts, Fit after 50 and digital inclusion computer classes. Fairmount Park has two tennis courts, rose gardens, Lake Evans, Brown Lake and Fairmount Lake, fishing, a golf course, lawn bowling green, barbecues and a restored historic boathouse with rental pedal boats (handicapped accessible).

Riverside County also has created the Network of Care, a "comprehensive, Internet-based resource is for the elderly and people with disabilities, as well as their caregivers and service providers." Here you'll find such topics as fall prevention, prescription assistance, and a message board that allows area seniors to communicate topics of concern and areas of interest. Need local transportation? Seniors can get around Riverside by reserving a ride with the city's Dial-A-Ride service available Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
