Charleston is steeped in history and much of this past is preserved throughout the area. Because of its position on the Atlantic Seaboard, Charleston became an important trading port. In the 1767, the city built the Exchange and Customs House, which became the “commercial, political and social center of Charles Town”—as it was then known. You can visit this structure, now called the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. During the American Revolution, rebels beat back a British assault in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. Cotton was king in Antebellum Charleston with plantations dotting the countryside. Two of these plantations are popular tourist attractions today. Other sites connected to this era are the Old Slave Mart Museum. In 1861, Confederate forces in the city fired on Fort Sumter sparking the country into the Civil War. Charleston’s entire history comes to life at the Charleston Museum, the country’s first museum built in 1773.

The city’s largest annual event is the Spoleto Festival held for several weeks in late May and early June. The performing arts festival features opera, dance, theater, classical music, jazz and other musical styles from artists around the world.
