Despite Santa Ana's high cost of living, the city boasts a number of affordable assisted living options. It also has plenty of senior specific programs and educational opportunities.
Though Santa Ana's cost of living is 42% above the national average, the city's 80 assisted living options are not far out of line with the national average. According to a recent Genworth Financial "Cost of Care" survey, a stay in a one-bedroom assisted living facility in Santa Ana is $3,500 a month; the national average is $3,261. A private room in a nursing home is $217 a day.
Santa Ana has several senior centers. The Southwest Senior Center provides senior activities and classes including dance, cooking, exercise and fitness, sewing, computer, arts and crafts. The center also serves daily meals, has an HICAP counselor and Legal Aid representative on site and Meals are provided on a daily basis. A HICAP counselor and a Legal Aid representative are available on-site on a monthly basis. Preventive health care is available through a nurse on a monthly basis at the Senior Center. Another area program called "Seniors on the Go", takes seniors on trips to venues in and around the area. Most of the trips are free.
For seniors wanting to continue their education, the Santa Ana area has a number of senior specific resources. Huntington Beach Adult School provides senior classes, many of them free. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) provides two semesters of classes for one low fee. OLLI provides 2 semesters of learning for one low annual fee in subjects such literature, history, science, arts and travel. There is no homework of test taking. The Saddleback College Emeritus Institute offers classes in disciplines such as music, English literature, history, computer, physical exercise, art, health, Spanish and theater. UCLA and its Center on Aging offers memory training, community meetings featuring guest speakers, and a scholars program offers regular undergraduate classes to seniors at UCLA for discounted prices.
