Honolulu Oahu Assisted Living

Since 1980, the percentage of Hawaiians 60-years-old and older has doubled to 20%. And according to the State Plan on Aging, that number is only expected to grow with the baby boomers--the "silver tsunami"--now retiring. Fortunately, if you plan to retire in Honolulu, the city has 40 assisted living options to choose from.

It's no secret that living in Hawaii can be expensive. After all, it is paradise. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the cost of living is 65% higher than the nation's average; second highest only to New York City. The combined state and local tax rate is 9.6%, which puts Hawaii in the middle for the country. The good news is that Social Security, military, federal, state/local, and some private pensions are all exempt from taxes. And all out-of-state government pensions are exempt. Costs for assisted living vary according to the level of care, location, and services provided. In Honolulu, a one-bedroom assisted living costs an average of $3,900 a month compared to the national median of $3,261. A private bedroom in a nursing home averages $314 a day while a semi-private averages $292. In the next 10 years these costs are expected to jump by 40%.

Honolulu makes their seniors a priority with a number of services across the island. For example, there are the following senior centers: Catholic Charities Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center, Kaneohe Community & Senior Center, Kapahulu Center, and the Makua Alii Senior Center. Moiliili Senior Center, and the Waikiki Community Center. To get around the island, there are a number of curb-to-curb service providers such as Catholic Charities Hawaii, 5 Star Transcare Systens, GDD Handitrans, and the Honolulu Rapid Transit (HRT), the public bus service operating 107 routes. If you're a life-long learner, Honolulu has plenty of educational opportunities: Honolulu Community College, Kapiolani Community College, Kupuna Education Center, and the Leeward Community College, to name a few.
