Baltimore Assisted Living

The Best Baltimore Assisted Living

For seniors looking for assisted living on the East Coast, Baltimore offers a number of options. Whether you want to live downtown, uptown or in the suburbs, this metro seaport of 2.7 million has something for everyone. In fact, Baltimore is often called the "city of neighborhoods" for its 225 distinct districts of which 72 are historical districts.

Baltimore's overall cost of living, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is 20% higher than the national average, but still lower than most Northern coastal cities. The most recent median home sales price was $175,038 but this could be an anomaly as this price is nearly 40% higher than the previous year's. By comparison, last year's median home price was just $110,000. The average property tax is $3,850; the average auto insurance is $2,217. Maryland also has one of the highest state and local tax burdens in the country at 10%.

One neighborhood in Baltimore to consider is Mt. Vernon. You'll be within walking distance of the University of Baltimore, the symphony hall, the Walters Art Museum and the five-story, 140-year-old Peabody Library. A little further north is the community of Cheswolde and Roland Park Place assisted living. This neighborhood is more suburban than urban but still just 4 miles to the city center. Here, you're not far from Union Memorial Hospital, John’s Hopkins University and the Rotunda shopping center.

If want to live outside the city, try the suburb of Ellicott City. This city of 155,000 west of Baltimore recently made Money magazine’s "best places to live" for its abundance of parkland, range of housing options, and profusion of amenities. And for retired military, the amenities of Fort Meade Army Base are nearby. The assisted living community of Heartlands Senior Living Village is in the heart of Ellicott City.
