If you're not familiar with Minneapolis-St. Paul, you may be in for a little sticker shock. The cost of living is 14% above the national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Taxes are among some of the highest in the country at 10.3% for state and local taxes alone. Retirees pensions, including federal pensions, are taxable by Minnesota regardless of where your pension was earned. Most facilities require a security deposit from $300 up to $1,500. The average cost for a one-bedroom assisted living facility is $3,540. For a private room in a nursing home: $239 a day.
