The most common is the Assisted Living Residence (ALR), which is "a residential facility licensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services to provide apartment style living, congregate dining and assisted living services. Apartment units offer, at a minimum, one unfurnished room, a private bathroom, a kitchenette and a lockable door on the unit entrance. Units are single or double occupancy." Less common are the Comprehensive Personal Care Home (CPCH) and the Assisted Living Program (ALP).

According to a recent survey by Genworth Financial, the average monthly cost for a one-room in an assisted living facility in Newark is $5,450. For a private room in a nursing home, the average cost is $340 a day; a semi-private room averages $313 a day. Medicare does not pay for assisted living; Medicaid is accepted at many facilities, but most residents pay privately.
