Pittsfield's Ralph J. Froio Senior Center, run by the Pittsfield Council on Aging, is located in downtown Pittsfield and serves the area's senior community. The city lies on the Housatonic River and between the Berkshire Hills and the Taconic Range. Pittsfield is the cultural center of the Berkshire region, normally called the Berkshires. Tanglewood, where the Boston Symphony Orchestra plays in the summer, is near the city. In downtown Pittsfield there are many theaters, museums, and points of interest, including the Berkshire Museum, the Beacon Cinema, the Barrington Stage Company and the Hebert Arboretum. The downtown also houses the Berkshire Athenaeum.
Recreationally, the city is surrounded by golf clubs, parks and conservation areas. For golf there are Pittsfield Country Club, GE Athletic Association Golf Course and Berkshire Hills Country Club, among others. Onota Lake lies to the east of the city for boating and fishing outings. At the Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary there are opportunities for hiking, walking and bird watching, as it is maintained by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. The city also maintains more than a dozen parks throughout the city and many miles of bike paths. Further away there are Bates Memorial State Park, the Pittsfield State Forest, Pittsfield State Watershed Area and Balance Rock State Park.
